Jewish lifecycles are a time of growth when we express ourselves through ritual. Cantor Barbra is available to serve your needs whether it is a Bar/ Bat Mitzvah for your child, your own wedding, or the naming of your child. On other occasions, Cantor Barbra conducts funerals and unveilings.

Cantor Barbra Lieberstein was ordained at The Academy For Jewish Religion, NYC in 1998. During her student years and after graduation, she served Reform and Reconstructionist pulpits in New Jersey as well as in Long Island. As a cantor, she built up adult and children's choirs, developed the curriculum for the Bar/Bat Mitzvah students and taught adult B’nai Mitzvah classes.

After leaving the pulpit, Cantor Barbra spent a few years teaching Jewish music to pre-schools, religious schools, and led a Jr. Congregation. She tutors Bar/Bat Mitzvah students from congregations in the area as well as many unaffiliated students. Cantor Barbra was secretary of the New Jersey Cantors Concert Ensemble, co-led a Jewish Girl Scout troop, and conducted the High Holiday choir at Beth Rishon in Wyckoff for 9 years.

She is a member of both the Cantors Assembly (Conservative Movement) the American Conference of Cantors (Reform Movement) and the Women Cantors Network. She is married to Scott Fergang and has three children.

  • Dear Barbra and Cammy,

Thank you. I wanted to take some time to reflect upon Ryan and his Bar Mitzvah before sending this note to you both. I'm glad I did.

Ryan's journey in becoming a Bar Mitzvah wasn't just a few lessons that ended with a service and a party. It was much more. With your teachings and time, patience and practices, he gained a Jewish education. The time you spent working with Ryan added tremendously to the Jewish cultural experience we share as part of our Epstein Family values. I saw this when he rose proudly and confidently to share his prayers and Torah portion with the guests in our home. It was fantastic.

What really showed me that he understood what it means to be Jewish and more telling of the wonderful young man that you helped guide, was our discussion of the massacre in Pittsburgh over the past weekend. With kindness, compassion and deep thoughtfulness, we discussed what it meant to be targeted and discriminated against for your faith and beliefs. We talked about how we hoped to prevent such horror in the future. I was so sad to have the conversation with him but also optimistic that we have raised a great young man who will always respect and protect what it means to be Jewish. Appreciate your part in these life lessons.

    Again, many thanks.

  • Dear Cantor Barbra,

I still can’t believe it was exactly a week ago that we had Jason’s Bar Mitzvah! We’re still hearing from family and friends about what a phenomenal job he did and how wonderful your service was. Our family is truly blessed to have worked with you and your wonderful teacher, Galia.

You taught Jason about his Jewish heritage and prepared him so well for his Bar Mitzvah. In addition to learning the prayers and the Torah portion, he had the opportunity to explore many of the customs and traditions of the Jewish religion.

Jason had a truly wonderful experience, he was so well prepared and loved singing and speaking in Hebrew. Thanks for helping to make his Bar Mitzvah a joyous, loving and spiritual event for our entire family.

It’s been a pleasure getting to know you and we’d be happy to recommend you to other families. We’re beyond blessed and proud of Jason and will always be eternally grateful to you.

    Best wishes

  • Cantor Barbra, Now that we are catching our breath, we wanted to reach out with a huge thank you! Scott’s Bar Mitzvah service was perfect in every way. Thank you for working with us to capture his spirit and to provide such a spiritual service. We have heard repeatedly from family and friends that it was one of the most meaningful bar mitzvahs they have ever attended. We so appreciate the patience you showed as we worked together to find the perfect readings; one of our guests even clipped a poem from the service to keep in his wallet. We are thankful that we found you and Rivka to work with Scott as he really gained from his experience of becoming a Bar Mitzvah and has internalized and retained much of what he has learned. Bar Mitzvah Sage Allen is also quite appreciative and had high praise for you. It meant so much to him to become a Bar Mitzvah for the second time and it also meant a great deal to our family.

We thank you for all that you did and are so glad that you will be part of the memories of our most special day!

  • Hi Barbra, Thank you for making Jason's Bar Mitzvah! You did a fabulous job over the last few weeks leading up to the big day. The ceremony was actually quite beautiful from start to finish. You lead everything perfectly. Your speech about Jason was right spot on as was your singing accompanied by your guitarist!LOL. I was so proud of Jason, he did great. This was only possible through the lessons provided by your tutor, Cammy as well as you, over the last few weeks as you prepared Jason. I would highly recommend your services and once again, thank you for helping to making Jason's Bar Mitzvah most memorable.

    Warm regards,

  • Cantor Barbra, Thank you so much for all your work with Ethan. We are so thrilled to have found you. The weekly lessons with a wonderful tutor, on our schedule, at his speed were perfect for our son. The service was unique and warm, and it brought out the very best in our child and the beauty of our shared Jewish traditions. All of our family and friends raved about him... and about you! Thank you for making this special experience just right for our family.

    With Love,

  • Cantor Barbra, Thank you so much for preparing Bradley as he approached his Bar Mitzvah day. He learned so much through the process, was extremely well prepared, and was very comfortable with you - all of which helped him to perform wonderfully, and made the ceremony fun and memorable for him. The ceremony was beautiful and so many of our guests felt truly involved and connected. We highly recommend you!

  • Cantor Barbra and her staff are consummate professionals. At every step of our son's tutoring Cantor Barbra and her staff made sure he was prepared for his bar mitzvah and ready to read from the Torah. On the "big day" Cantor Barbra did a fantastic job leading the service and her dedication and hard work showed as my son read from the Torah beautifully. If you are looking for a Cantor to prepare your child for their Bar or Bat Mitzvah look no further than Cantor Barbra.

  • I have been meaning to write to you since Daniel's Bar Mitzvah. Thank you so much for preparing him and for leading such a wonderful service! I thought that everything was great and it turned out exactly how we wanted it. Your husband was also a big help in getting the room ready.

Thank you so much for tutoring Jake. He had a wonderful experience with you as well as Morah Barbara. You both are extremely kind and made this process enjoyable with very little stress. Jake was very prepared and couldn't ask for a better tutor and Jewish learning experience Thank you again,

  • Cantor Barbra,
I wanted to thank you for making Sydney’s bat mitzvah service even more special than we could have imagined. We knew she was going to be spectacular, but your words were equally beautifully. I also wanted to express that working with you and Galia for the past two years was such an enjoyable experience for her. She learned such much more than her torah portion. She learned about her heritage and all the traditions that we want her to carry on in her adult life.

    Thank you again for everything.

  • Dear Cantor Barbra,
Words are not enough to thank you. Your spiritual presence and guidance gave so much meaning to Maya’s bat mitzvah (and Ariana’s 3 years ago too!). We appreciate your personal and intimate approach to meeting this significant milestone for both of our children and for us as a family. We are grateful to you and will follow you if you choose to perform high holiday services in the future! You give meaning to the word “congregation”. You are able to bring a group of strangers together in a room and create a sense of warmth and community with your voice and guidance. Thank you and we will miss you and look forward to seeing you soon!

  • As you know, we originally sought a tutor to renew Alexa's interest in studying about Jewish tradition after traditional Hebrew School did not work for us. Morah Debbie not only reignited Alexa's desire to learn, but gave her the drive and reassurance to successfully study for her bat mitzvah. We also were concerned about not having a bat mitzvah service in a synagogue, but ultimately the service became so much more meaningful and intimate as Alexa was able to make it her own. We are so appreciative that the tutoring and leadership services you provided were available to make it possible and practical (and beautiful!) for our family to continue with Jewish tradition. Looking forward to our next bat mitzvah with you in a few years,

  • Dear Cantor Barbra,
I can't thank you enough for our son's beautiful Bar Mitzvah service today. It was such a special ceremony. It was so warm and loving and relaxed. It was really the nicest Bar Mitzvah that I have ever attended. Our son was very relaxed and confident and happy! Everyone loved it!!!
Thank you so much again, from the bottom of our hearts!

    Keep in touch!

    All our best,

  • Dear Cantor Barbra,
We just wanted to thank you for a beautiful day. Billy's Bar Mitzvah was fantastic. Your service was just perfect. We received so many compliments. Billy's friends said that it was the best Bar Mitzvah they've gone to. Our nieces and nephews were thrilled to be included, especially when you asked them to march with the Torah. We were told that it was elegant and personalized. The pamphlets were easy to follow and allowed everyone to participate.

Also, we'd like to compliment tutor Cammy. She has a cheery and encouraging personality. A great match for Billy! He always looked forward to his lessons with her. She prepared him well for his big day.

Thank you again for a day we will never forget. Hope to see you soon - we have 2 more boys coming up through the ranks!

We want to thank you for officiating such a beautiful Bar Mitzvah ceremony for our son Mychal. We, as well as our friends and family were so impressed with how prepared Mychal was for his ceremony- thanks to your guidance. He did such a great job and we are so proud of him!

Being a working mom, I really appreciate the in-home tutoring you provide. You are flexible with the schedule when necessary which makes things easy for us. You are always available to answer questions- whether by text, email, phone or in person- you are always very accessible and responsive.

We are happy to be working with you again for our son Ben and are looking forward to his special day.

  • Dear Cantor Barbra,
I am forwarding many photos of my grandson Evan Liman's Bar Mitzvah on March 20, 2016. There we're 122 in attendance including 35 of his classmates, our family, and friends held at The Terrace of Biagio's in Paramus, NJ.

On behalf of all in our family we can only say we were supremely delighted & appreciative of the service you conducted!

It goes without saying that Evan was remarkably well prepared, confident, and happy. We look forward to you assisting again in his sister's Bat Mitzvah in December 2017. If there is any way we can help you feel free to let us know.
You are a pleasure to work with!

    Cordially,

  • Cantor Barbra,
When we first met I discussed with you that my old children were Bar Mitzvahed and I wanted Eli's to be different. We wanted it to be stress free and we wanted to enjoy the process. Well, you delivered on our request. The tutoring was perfect, Eli learned Jewish history, tradition, and was well prepared for his Bar Mitzvah. Thank you for allowing us to enjoy such an important time in our lives.

  • I used Cantor Barbra's services for my kids' B'nai Mitzvah. We initially had one of her tutors come to our home which was great and fit really well into my work schedule, as well as the kids' schedule. Having an at-home tutor allowed for a 'one on one' setting, which ensured me both kids were getting the most out of the lesson, rather than in a classroom setting where the child's mind might wander, or, the child may not speak up if he/she is not understanding all the material. Together with the tutor, the kids got exposure to Jewish culture, lifestyle, etc, as well as learning the Hebrew language, in preparation for their B'Nai Mitzvah. As we got closer to the event, Cantor Barbra came and provided the kids with much guidance and clear dedication to preparing for their B'Nai Mitzvah.

Having the lessons at the house for the last 2 ½ + years, allowed me to listen in, know exactly what the kids were getting out of the lessons, hear and feel very at ease and comfortable with the passion and commitment both Cantor Barbra and Morah Barbara (tutor) had towards making sure the kids were prepared.

I was very happy with Cantor Barbra’s delivery of the service. Very professional, caring and supportive from A to Z. I would definitely recommend her services.

  • Dear Cantor Barbra,
We wanted to say thank you so much for the terrific ceremony you conducted at Jarrod's Bar Mitzvah. We knew first hand it was going to be great as two years prior you did Jeremy’s and that was fantastic. You and Rivkah were so dedicated to ensuring Jarrod was prepared and ready to share in leading the ceremony and we were so impressed with the outcome. Thank you again for the life long memories our family has from these two events!

Love Joe, Pam, Jeremy and Jarrod

  • Dear Cantor Barbra,
I just wanted to tell you how grateful Mark, Michael, Thuy and I are for the training you have given to Sophie and for the way that you ran the beautiful service last month. We are not a traditional family but a huge “blended family” that loves & respects each other. We will always treasure the memory of her bat mitzvah, and all the time and effort you gave to her to achieve it.
